MISSION

The Bemidji Police Department is committed to active partnerships with the community in order to protect life and property, innovatively solve problems, enhance the safety and quality of life and to provide exemplary police service by enforcing the law in a just and impartial manner.

VISION

The vision of the Bemidji Police Department is to be leaders in assuring quality of life, safety, and protection for every member of the Bemidji community. This vision embraces the philosophy of community-oriented policing in all aspects of planning and operations.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Bemidji Police Department has 34 licensed peace officers, three support staff and one CSO. We handle approximately 27,000 calls for service per year.  Our department has 25 peace officers assigned to the patrol division which respond to all calls for service within the City of Bemidji. Two of these peace officers are assigned as School Resource Officers in the Bemidji Public School System. Our Detective division consists of five detectives who handle many of the more complicated or lengthy felony investigations.  Our support staff handle data entry, crime mapping, evidence intake, parking enforcement, animal control and many office support duties. The Chief of Police and Police Captain serve as the agency administration. As a department, we strive to work closely with the community, city departments, county, state and federal agencies to make Bemidji a quality place to live and raise a family.

BEMIDJI POLICE DEPARTMENT K9 PROGRAM

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM:
Since 2023, the Bemidji Police Department has been working toward re-establishing our canine program. Unfortunately, the department has not had a canine program since K9 Justus retired in the early 1990’s.  Due to lack of funding, the Bemidji Police Department has had to rely on surrounding agencies to assist with our K9 needs.

We are excited to announce the newest Bemidji K9, Doc made his debut in March 2024.  This Labrador Retriever is highly trained in the detection of controlled substances, the ability to assist officers in locating evidence, missing people and non-violent offenders.  Officer Kniss and K9 Doc attended 12 weeks of training the beginning of March 2024.  Officer Kniss and her new partner are excited to enhance police and community relationships at local events and be positive figures for our community.

In an effort to continue to fund the K9 Program, the Bemidji Police Department will be hosting various events and campaigns. Stay tuned and be sure to check back often!
